What is ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY?
Assistive technology is anything that helps someone with a disability do a task - or do it more easily...
How do I use Assistive Technology in my classroom?
STRATEGIES...
- Have a student use a Big Mac to communicate the "quote" of the day
- Do you still have your slide projector from years ago???? Use an Able Net "slide projector adaptor" to adapt picture books and other stories. HOW? Buy slide film and take pictures of the story. The best way to take the pictures is outside using daylight - a flash will ruin the pictures. The hook up your adaptor and a switch and you have a story ona large screen. Students of many ages love this activity!
- Use a voice output switch to tell announcements to individual classrooms!
- Play, What time is it? Use a Spinner as a clock. The students with disabilitis can activate the spinner with a switch
- Allow the child with disabilities to make choices through EYE GAZE... and make SURE to give appropriate "wait time" for the student to answer.
- Use a voice output switch (communication aide) and record a repeated line from a story... EXAMPLE, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see?" As the story is read aloud, the student can activate the switch every time the line is repeated in the story...
- ADAPT...ADAPT...ADAPT!!! Use battery adaptors to adapt various classroom materials! An excellent example is the battery powered scissors! The best place to track down these scissors is at a "Dollar Store..." AND they are cheap!
- Particpate in the daily attendance and use a voice output system to say, "I'm here!"
- The Power Link by Able Net is used for adapting any electrical appliance! Use the power link to adapt electric knives, mixers, lamps, black lights, TV, radio, etc....
