Learning Tools
If you would like more insight into your child's
special learning needs, a new evaluative tool can help you do that.
A new product, Stages, released in January 2000 by Assistive
Technology Inc. Stages starts with a book that discusses
seven developmental stages of learning: cause and effect, language
readiness, emerging language, early concepts, advanced concepts
and communication, functional language, and written expression.
Stages is invaluable for addressing developmental stages,
rather than age groups, because everyone learns differently.
After determining which stage is right for the
child, parents can order the appropriate software bundle. Schools
can additionally order benchmark activity kits, software bundles,
and starter kits. Stages is a comprehensive program for special
needs learning that promotes inclusiveness in the classroom. A free
sampler CD is available to test out (Macintosh version only). For
additional information, visit: http://www.assistivetech.com/p-stages.htm
Play Attention!
Children and adults with difficulty focusing attention can "learn
to learn" using only the power of concentration—no keyboard,
mouse, or joystick! Play Attention is a new device that utilizes
a special space-age helmet and fun video exercises. The helmet is
loaded with sensors that access brainwaves indicative of focus and
cognitive processing, allowing the user to manipulate game action
via the power of concentration! It's creator, Peter Freer, CEO and
founder of Unique Logic + Technology, adapted sophisticated instrumentation
to fit the personal computer environment, and then incorporated
a peripheral space-age helmet to process brain output and translate
it onto a computer screen.
Users of Play Attention can watch their
progress as it's happening—making it immediately rewarding.
Play Attention is a success-based learning tool that builds
self-esteem, enhanced social interactions, and improved grades.
The interactive videotape engages the student in fun and challenging
exercises—compelling him or her to graduate to more difficult
levels. It also improves the ability to relax and to listen.
The computerized educational feedback system comes
complete with helmet, computer input device, and instructional videotape
($2495.) from Unique Logic + Technology. See www.playattention.com;

for persons with learning disabilities. It simultaneously presents
visual and auditory information (speaking text aloud) to provide
the learner with two points of reference at once. The Kurzweil
3000 displays a full-color version with interesting pictures
and illustrations. Learners may read along, take notes, and highlight
words right on the computer screen, and it comes with a 175,000-word
vocabulary. There is even a feature that speaks word definition
and the device reads Web pages! To learn more, visit the Lernout
& Hauspie Web site: www.lhsl.com
