Dear Friends:

We've all been told about the importance of fighting plaque. Brushing after eating, flossing, and having regular professional cleanings is so important to good health.

But many of us think the flossing part isn't really necessary. It's actually crucial for many reasons: the first is obvious—it removes food particles from between your teeth before decay starts. Flossing also firms gums and that prevents periodontal disease. Periodontal disease causes bone loss and loss of teeth. It also means a lengthy trip to a periodontist for scaling and cleaning of your gums.

The third reason is that bacteria in your mouth can travel through your bloodstream to your heart. In fact, some cardiologists recommend a dental cleaning prior to heart surgery. So please floss! It only takes a couple of minutes and you can do it reading or watching television. It sure beats hours in the dentist's chair (that doesn't come cheap), or worse—tooth loss.

Now, since oral hygiene is a lot trickier for folks with limited use of one or both hands, it's good to know about widely available dental tools and tips.

Tips
1. If nothing else, antibacterial mouthwash covers a lot of ground. Listerine now comes in several palatable flavors and there are plenty of other brands of mouthwash available.
2. A toothpaste containing peroxide foams up and kills a lot of germs quickly. The foam gets into crevices, so even if you can't grip a toothbrush, you might rub toothpaste on your teeth, tongue and gums using a finger or a washcloth. (Not everyone can use peroxide-based products because it irritates sensitive skin.)
3. If you're not near a sink or mouthwash, then just "swish and swallow" with water. Water alone will clean away a lot of bacteria that causes bad breath and cavities. Rinsing your mouth does a lot of good, even if you can't brush.
4. An electric toothbrush used with a handgrip is very effective, if you can manage one. Now battery-operated electric toothbrushes are sold along side toothpastes and manual brushes. (They cost about $10-$12.)
5. If gripping is a problem, an occupational therapist will fit you with a grip and gripping tools. Or, see the Sammons Preston Roylan catalog (in resources) for gripping and hygiene aids.
