for all, and a group by this name helps people who use wheelchairs
experience the dignity of independent living. Over the Rainbow
manages two completely accessible apartment buildings, one
on the north side of Chicago, and one in Evanston, Illinois
that contains a business center for job training and employment.
The apartments make good use of assistive technology, such
as self-operating lifts that don't require a personal care
attendant, and accessible appliances in the kitchen. The Over
the Rainbow Association is located at 2040 Brown Avenue, Evanston,

The Home Living Center, has a model adapted kitchen and
bedroom that was just completed at United Cerebral Palsy's
Trutter Center in Cicero, Illinois. The center provides participants
with the opportunity to use technology as they practice home

911 Emergency Assistance. Chicago residents with disabilities
can get emergency protection by listing vital information
with the 911 Emergency Service. Residents may complete a registration
form for Chicago's 911 database that provides emergency personnel
with important details about a disability or illness, such
as wheelchair use, room confinement, or types of medication.
All of the City's fire trucks are equipped with computers
to help them quickly locate and rescue those in need. Registration
forms are available at City Hall or the Disability Field office
at 2102 W. Ogden Ave.

Build it right and they'll come. Optima Inc., a development
company based in Glencoe, Illinois, is reconciling a Fair
Housing Act violation and so must modify each of its 192 condominium
units in Deerfield, Illinois to make them accessible. Optima
must also certify to the U.S. Department of Justice that all
future developments will comply with the Fair Housing Act.
On November 16, 1999, online real estate service, HomeSeekers.com,
announced an agreement with New York-based WeMedia.com (publishers
of We Magazine) to launch a Web site designed specifically
to highlight homes in HomeSeekers' database with features
designed to assist those living with disabling conditions.
Ramps, railings, bathroom capabilities and kitchen facilities
will be used to identify properties included in the new Web
site, as well as sightless homes and homes for the hearing-impaired.
The site is due to launch in mid-December, 1999.
