Adaptive
Winter Sports
Adaptive ski programs exist wherever climate is
cold. Check with local sports and recreation organizations, local
government offices, such as the mayor's office, Chamber of Commerce,
or state tourism bureau for information.
For those who are unfamiliar, skiing is adapted
in many ways to suit the individual. Mono-skiing or "sit"-skiing
provides a seat attached to a wide, single ski. Ski poles for steering
and balance are shortened to three feet long. Any organization offering
adaptive skiing will also offer training and equipment to learn
in safety.
All sports and all forms of recreation can be
adapted! Find something you like to do and check out a disabled
sports program that offers it. Adaptive recreation organizations
are a lot of fun!
The next time you're planning a vacation, consider
going camping, sailing, or canoeing with a group. Facilitators and
volunteers ensure safety and diverse populations are welcomed and
encouraged.
